Best Air Conditioner Brands: Trane

Best Air Conditioner BrandsHow did your air conditioning system perform last summer? If it’s a Trane, we probably already know the answer. Trane systems stand on their stellar reputation earned over their 130 years of satisfied customers. If you enjoy comfortable summertime temperatures inside your home and you’re comparing makes and models of HVAC units, here’s what you need to know about Trane, one of the best air conditioner brands made today.

How Trane Began

A Norwegian immigrant, James Trane, founded the company in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1885 originally as a plumbing business. During an extremely cold winter one year, he hatched the idea to develop a steam heating system that operated under low pressure. He dubbed it the Trane Vapor Heating System.

This vapor heating system worked by heating a reservoir of water into steam which was then distributed through plumbing into radiators in each room that needed heat. As the steam loses its heat in the cold room it is heating, the water returns to its original fluid form and flows back into the reservoir. There it gets reheated and cycles back through the system.

James’ son Reuben, a mechanical engineer, worked to improve the radiator. He wanted to boost its heat delivery capability, and in 1923 he successfully invented the convector radiator which dramatically multiplied the amount of heat the radiator could give off. It finally took the form of a tube with fins, increasing the contact surface area enabling a single tube to rapidly heat more air over time.

In 1931, Trane was the first to develop methods for cooling the same interior spaces they heated as an industry leader. Successive technological innovations propelled the company into continued growth and success in all aspects of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Superior Quality

During the 1970’s, Trane began to look at ways to better manage energy. Through newly acquired Sentinel Electronics, Inc., Trane now also led the industry in developing automated integrated electronic controls for its climate control systems.

To date Trane engineers are responsible for over 1,500 patents within the industry. In 2010, Trane earned Popular Mechanics’ Breakthrough Award for its Trane ComfortLinks II control as one of that year’s Most Transformative Products. Trane’s CleanEffects whole house clean air system is the first to earn a certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

In 2018, and the previous three years, Trane earned America’s Most Trusted HVAC by PR firm Lifestory Research and is based on roughly 8,000 surveys each year.

One of the Best Air Conditioner Brands? Here’s why we think so

Low Noise Level

Ever hear an air conditioner that sounds like a farm tractor? It’s not a Trane. Trane units run an average of four decibels below every other competitor’s minimum noise range. Trane units usually top out at 55 to 75 decibel for all models. This is a noise level even your closest neighbors can barely hear.

High efficiency

AC efficiency is measured with an industry-wide standard known as SEER. It stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and measures the amount of wattage the unit consumes per hour of cooling. Systems with higher efficiency numbers reflect lower energy use on average. U.S. Government standards mandated that all systems should provide at least 14 SEER by January 2015. Trane units feature SEER ratings of 16 to 22 depending upon the model you choose.

With HVAC units, like anything else, you get the quality you pay for. Even with a slightly higher upfront cost, in the long run, you will pay less in maintenance and repairs, and lower your energy bill with a Trane unit.
